The North Carolina Wing’s newest squadron needs cadets to build the program

11/9/2016–GREENSBORO, NC–The Guilford Composite Squadron, the newest squadron in the North Carolina Wing, held an open house Thursday evening to attract new members for its Civil Air Patrol program.

The open house, held at the newest aviation facility of Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC), featured an Honor Guard, pizza dinner, introduction to active squadron members and the missions of the Civil Air Patrol, full information on activities of membership and 3 full training flight simulators with instructors supplied by GTCC.
 
The intent of the open house was to attract new members, both youth and adults, who want to serve their community, state and country. Currently the squadron has 15 active senior members and are targeting cadet age youth to kick-start that element of the squadron.
 
"We welcome new members, both seniors and cadets,” stated Squadron Commander Capt. Craig Myrick. “We particularly need cadet age members who are interested in beginning on the ground floor of the squadron, to set the foundation and  make it as strong as what we wish for it to be."
 
The event was supported by cadets from the North Carolina Leadership Academy (NCLA), under the direction of their Commander, Lt. Col. Shelley Gonzales. The cadets were eager to answer questions of prospective youth and their parents, as well as demonstrate their precision as the Honor Guard. 
 
Potential cadet members showed great interest in all the programs, activities and disciplines the Civil Air Patrol has to offer. Christopher Hungerford, who will be turning 12 in December,  is excited to become one of the first cadets of the squadron. “I do something else on the night of the squadron meetings, but I will be back, you can count on that. I will be a cadet,” he stated when asked if he was interested in joining. Christopher was also particularly proud that he did not crash when he landed in the simulator.  
 
The Guilford Composite Squadron meets on Thursday nights at 7pm in Aviation Building #3 of GTCC at 1053 Old Stage Coach Trail (off of Ballinger Road) in Greensboro, NC.
