6/10/2017––This past Memorial Day, the Sugar Valley Composite Squadron had the opportunity to participate in the 2017 Mooresville-Lake Norman Exchange Club Field of Flags Commemorative Ceremony in Mooresville, NC. The Sugar Valley Composite Squadron had six senior members and six cadets volunteer at the event.

Prior to the event, citizens purchased over 500 flags and members of the Exchange Club placed them in a large field in honor or memory of a veteran. CAP members started off the day assisting with directing cars to handicapped parking slots and other specific jobs. The ceremony began with the presentation of the colors, followed by the processional of the Mooresville Fire Department's Bagpipes and Drums Band and the Iredell County Honor Guard. A “welcome from the Exchange Club” speech was given by the club's president, Elizabeth Grantham.

After more songs and speeches, a tribute to the armed services was given. Each military branch's anthem was played and all veterans stood during their anthem. After the closing remarks, the names of all the veterans and groups honored and remembered by a flag were solemnly read aloud by members of the Exchange Club.

John David Keller concluded this by leading the crowd in singing “God Bless the USA.” Finally, the Iredell County Honor Guard shot a 21 Gun Salute, ending the memorial service. Sugar Valley Squadron members then assisted with pulling up the flags for families to take home with them.
